This neglected side-yard gate had been exposed to the elements for years, leaving the wood weathered and the metal frame in need of renewed protection. As a labor of love, we offered to restore the gate and bring its original character back to life rather than replace it.

We began by carefully sanding the wood boards to remove the damaged surface and reveal the natural grain underneath. Instead of trying to hide every knot, variation, and weathered detail, we preserved the wood’s imperfections as part of its unique character. The boards were then protected with Man O’ War Spar Varnish, creating a durable clear finish designed to help guard exterior wood against moisture, sunlight, and changing weather conditions.

The metal gate frame was properly prepared and primed with Dunn-Edwards Ultra-Grip Premium, promoting strong adhesion and long-lasting performance. We then applied Dunn-Edwards Aristoshield, a durable coating suitable for metal surfaces, to create the crisp black lines that frame and contrast the natural wood.

For a custom finishing touch, the center accent panel was painted purple using Dunn-Edwards Evershield Velvet. The bold accent color, clean metalwork, and restored wood grain came together to create a one-of-a-kind exterior gate with renewed protection and personality.

This 2018 restoration demonstrates how professional wood refinishing, exterior varnishing, and metal painting can transform a neglected feature into an attractive architectural detail. At Vista SC Painting, we take pride in preserving natural wood, appreciating its individual character, and adding the precise finishing details that bring the entire project together.
